Upon first impression, the St Regis Rome exudes magnificence and an old grandeur of time gone by. As you enter, there is an air of fine and cheerful hospitality that it seems only the Italians can accomplish with such authenticity. Since its opening in 1894, this grand palazzo has welcomed countless international visitors, dignitaries and the like, withstanding the test of time through its cherished heritage and luxurious interiors. Fast forward 2020 and this palazzo has undergone renovation to suit current tastes whilst still maintaining its historical beauty and art in Rome’s most prime address.
Why should one consider a stay here? Besides being well taken care of and its close proximity to all the major attractions, it is a trusted establishment steeped in history. Consider its historical significance combined with elegant and contemporary rooms, with staff whose only wish is to make you feel that Italian comfort – never taking things too seriously because life is much too short for that. That feeling of elegance and luxury living makes one feel almost important and it’s that valued feeling of being treated with respect and hospitality that makes considering a stay at St Regis worthwhile.
There are 138 rooms in total with 23 lavishly decked suites and on this occasion we took up one night at the Metropolitan Suites which is perfect for couples or families. Our first impression was the considerable space – an open plan living area consisting of an L-shaped sofa, mini bar and working desk, large flat-screen tv and in the hallway a separate toilet and closet space. Then there is the master bedroom with an uber comfortable bed to sink into made of custom Frette linens, Majestic Murano chandelier and specially selected object d’art to compliment the overall room aesthetic. Leading up to the large travertine marble bathroom, a walk-in closet where you’ll find the usual robes, slippers and laundry amenities. This light cinnamon-toned room makes one feel relaxed and pampered with luxurious toiletries. Expect sheer comfort and cleanliness within these luxury suites and rooms without underestimating the size of the hotel. Once you’ve checked-into the St Regis Rome consider yourself specially taken care of. The last thing the hotel wants is to disappoint a guest.
Of course one could opt outside the hotel walls for a culinary adventure but if you’re lazy and uncertain, the hotel’s restaurant Lumen is one we didn’t look back on so much so that we had the same pasta, twice. It was that good and it was that memorable. What made it even more memorable was our waiter Pietro – you can tell he’s worked at the St Regis for a long time, he understands the relationship with guests and ensures you have a great time within his presence. We recommend dinner at Lumen Garden for that semi-alfresco dining experience and of course we highly recommend ordering the Taglioni. Make sure to reserve your table so that you’re in time to witness St Regis’ champagne sabering ritual which commences at 7:30pm. Fun fact, the champagne sabering dates back to the battles of Napoleon Bonaparte who would slash open champagne bottles as a sign of victory and defeat. This has become a cherished tradition during the evening time at St Regis and one you shouldn’t miss. Breakfast is usually included with your stay and you can expect a decent buffet spread consisting of cold cuts, cereals, a selection of breads, juices as well as an egg station. The best part about breakfast is being able to sit in the lobby and take in the 360 degree extravagance all around you.
What lacks in the St Regis Rome is a lavish swimming pool but we find it is made up for in the spa and gym. For those that need even more of a break, we recommend a massage treatment at the hotel’s Kami Spa. The deep tissue treatment was a treat in itself and our therapist who is originally from Bangkok did an amazing job in helping to release tension. If tension-release isn’t your main area of concern and you just wish to relax, we also recommend going for the Balinese massage. Otherwise the spa isn’t a priority when at the St Regis Rome but we take comfort in knowing that it is there and as we had the pleasure in trying it out, we can assure you that the treatments are well worth it.
One night doesn’t seem to suffice and we really do recommend guests, whether old or new, to spend a few nights here to make the stay truly worthwhile. It doesn’t get much better than being in the heart of Rome, staying at a historical five star establishment with staff you’ll easily get to know the names of, as each one tries to make a lasting impression.
